Sheros Of The Day - Susan Fales Hill and Josephine Premice
Premice, who was of Haitian descent, came to fame as a singer and on-off stage actress. Her peers and friends included Carmen De Lavallade, Eartha Kitt, and Diahann Carroll. She sacrificed stardom for her family.
Her daughter, Fales-Hill, got her big break writing for The Cosby Show. She later became the Executive Producer for A Different World. She is largely known as a NYC socialite and author of 2 fantastic books: Always Wear Joy and One Flight Up.
1. Its been a long time since I’ve felt passion and true desire for a man. I wonder if I ever will feel it…especially any time soon. Every guy I’ve met this year has caused me to involuntarily Kanye-shrug.
2. I want to go to grad school, and have 2 in mind but loans are a killer. Time for planning (ie: scholarship applications)? I think so.
3. The most courageous thing I can do is become the woman I dream of becoming; and taking the steps to live the life of my dreams.
4. I feel tired…all the time. No bueno.
5. Summer is coming, yet I’m not excited. Go figure.
6. I feel like I’m stuck in a rut. I don’t know why.
7. Time goes by fast. We’re already in the 5 month of the year. Where is the time going?
8. I really wish what happened last Friday would have gone a lot different. I don’t like things ending so muddied and abrupt. Guess we just don’t click.
9. Finally gonna grow out my hair. *fingers crossed*
10. I miss having a male shoulder to lean on. Too bad all the potentials don’t look strong enough to support me.

So, this morning I woke up to what appeared to be a discussion of the image the media gives off of NYC. I don’t know how this convo came about, especially at 8 am, but I soon found myself hotly engaged in it referencing the hit show, Sex And The City.
Anyone who knows me knows that I loathe the series (I did however, enjoy the movies, go figure). Like Kelly Cutrone once said, SATC really has messed up how women view the city. So many girls move from their hometowns with stars in their eyes and dreams in their heads, thinking they will live a fabulous life a la Carrie and Samantha. Uhhh…not gonna happen ladies.
Thing is, I always wondered how a character like Carrie afforded her lifestyle while being a writer. A few of my followers were quick to point out that Carrie did have money issues, but they were glanced over about 3x max during the duration of the franchise. As a fellow NYer and burgeoning nightlife writer, the extremes people go to to see and be seen are insane. Some women and men spend money they don’t have to be seen in the next season’s attire and to be noticed by the Grand Dames of NY society.
People think that when I bring up my criticisms of Carrie it is out of “hate.” It really isn’t. My thing is, I’ve always wondered if Carrie’s portrayal was a mere reflection of what many young, modern-day women look like. I’m pretty sure that if most of us tallied the cost of the shoes, outfits, jewelry, handbags, and accessories we’ve purchased over the last few years — they would probably total more than the amount of money we have in our savings’ accounts. Hmmm…food for thought.

Christina Aguilera - Life Me Up
If you lift me up
Just get me through this night
I know I’ll rest tomorrow
And I’ll be strong enough to try
My soul has been echoing this…
